SS Pro Planer free standing

Post by ERLover »

As I posted on the Community, I have a chance to buy a SS Pro Planer on a free standing base for 550$, should I go for it?

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them. :)

@>Ed, since it was CL and sold bought stuff on it I got it for 525$, I do have an Old Ryobi 10" that works great, and my wood supplier has a 52" planer and a 48" drum sander and there charge for time on it is dirt cheap, but I heard so many good things here about the SS Pro that just needed to add it to the SS stable, may need to get a bigger barn for all. I guess to a previous thread about the CP miter saw that I did not need this afternoon, that I was thinking about buying, I am happier with all I read here about the SS Pro Planer, and buying that instead of the miter saw that I did not need. He has some type of shaping thing, dont know if it is the jig or a belt sander attachment, I am picking it up tomorrow.

I'm confused. The Pro Planer (the one with the cast iron table) is only sold as free standing model. Shopsmith also sells a Mark V mount planer (with a cast aluminum table with a steel covering), but it doesn't say "Pro Planer" on it. I know they also make a planer stand that the Mark V mount planer can be retrofitted to, but that doesn't make it a Pro Planer.

So which did you buy, ERLover, a Pro Planer or Mark V planer on a stand?

Algale, I am picking it up tomorrow, he said it is a Pro Planer with cast tables, and is the free standing model.

Al is right on. The Pro planer says "12" Professional Planer" on the in feed shroud. The MK V mount planer says "Shopsmith 12" Planer". The Pro planer and stand are black. Another thing is the motor on the Pro planer stand is 1 3/4HP and the MK V mount planer stand is 1 1/2HP.

None of that is a deal breaker. I would buy it either way but if it is not truly a Pro planer I would point out the differences and negotiate the price down.

No, I don't think so. ProPlaner maybe. PowerPro No.

Do both of the motors run? Big cost item if they don't.

Windows 10 runs all your old programs so just use what you used before.

Castors come up all the time on eBay. Just wait for a nice looking set at a good price. N problem! :D
