Hi there, I am facing a problem with my 1985 Shopsmith. I've been using my Shopsmith for about 3 years. Over this time I upgraded it into a 520 with no problems until last week when I noticed a weird noise. After reading what could be I removed the quill and both bearing were out, so I purchased a set of new ones and have them replaced in a machine shop; at the same time I checked the drive sleeve assembly and changed the bearings too. While doing this I noticed the belts were in bad shape so I ordered both of them. I followed the instruction sent by Shopsmith and now I have no noise but the problems are: the dial speed is hard to turn it 9 (it was hard in the beginning but now is worse) and problem 2 is that I turn my Shopsmith in slow and as I turn it to fast little by little it just wont speed up; then I turn it down a little and start speeding up but it takes its time to speed up. Any ideas what did I do wrong? I really will appreciate any help anyone can give me.

I have a 1986 SS and I replaced the bearings and belts in mine about a month ago. I also noticed that the speed control was hard to turn as I checked quadrant assembly teeth. The teeth had a burr on the teeth. I lightly filed the burr off, trying to keep the alignment of the teeth. I back it together and the speed control turns a lot better and smoother.
Remember the teeth on the quadrant are aluminum and the worm control shaft is steel.

A sluggish response to speed control changes is usually caused by the floating sheave(motor shaft) not moving along the shaft freely.

And NEVER force the speed knob towards SLOW.

Hi there, good morning. I have never oiled the sheaves due to my ignorance. Sorry Which oil should I use? and how much? Should I oil all the 6 sheaves? Every when should I oil such? In addition, I understand that the sluggish is due to the motor shaft not moving the way it should. Should I remove the belts oil the sheaves and then? (besides putting back the belts on) Please be patient with me is the first time I am giving service to my SS.

Gosh Lyall. Thank you for the great tip. Is amazing how many mistakes we can make every day for lack of knowledge. Thank you. I will oil my SS sheaves TODAY and see what happens.

One last thing! Should I use 3 in 1 oil perhaps? or some good quality motor oil.
