Thanks for everyones help, these machines are amazing.
Oh, the 10ER did all of the leaf box except for the routing (dados, grooves, etc) and the 10ER jigsaw did the leaves (with a little help from me )

Very nice work all around. Are the lines on the leafs carved or are they part of the grain of the wood? I have never had success with box joints. Probably because I never had any luck making a good jig to do them.

You can certainly be very proud of these projects. That is just plain beautiful work. Especially all of the joinery. Practice makes perfect and it looks like you ate already there!

Bill, the leaves were made from scrap quarter sawn pine that I cut the "half leaf" shape with the jigsaw, then resawed the shape to get book matched "pedals". The "veins" are just the grain that matches up...
The stems are cedar that were cut with the jigsaw, the sides is Tiger Hemlock (commonly known as Hem-fir 2x4 construction lumber .... the posts are Redwood construction lumber.
Chuck (I am going to stop by one of these days and buy you a coffee ....), the box joints were a product of this thread http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/begin ... 17079.html that you, Ed, and Algale bailed me out of. Once I got you guys "adjustments" dialed in, they worked great!

Nice work, Dick! I'm a bit jealous, 'cuz I haven't had time to play with box joints yet.
I was noticing how much the knot you left in the lid adds to the character of the box. And then it struck me that you might be interested in some figured hardwoods for this kind of project. If so, check out CurlyMapleWood.com. The selection there is a bit picked-over right now, but if you get on their mailing list, they'll notify you when they have a new batch, usually with some truly gorgeous pieces. For small box-type projects, they have some great deals under "Hobby Packs / Cutoff Shorts".

Thanks Dennis. I am about ready to graduate to some hardwood projects. The curlymaplewood.com sounds like a good idea to start with. I will give them a try. The box joints, once I gained some understanding on how to make them, were not that hard to do. Give them a try, it is pretty satisfying when they work. My jig was just a 3/4 fence attached to the miter with the slot cut and the key made. I adjusted the fit (as the thread discusses) by tapping on the quill to make minute adjustments for tight or loose. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It takes me forever to do these projects, because I am measuring everything ten times and fretting over the cut(s) before I do them LOL, but it is still satisfying when they work out. I make a lot of mistakes, and have to remake parts periodically, but hey, I am learning.
