Greenie Bench Tube Size

Greenie Bench Tube Size
I have picked up from another thread that early Greenies bench tubes were 1 7/8" diameter and sometime only known to the Gods the bench tube size on Greenies were changed to 1 3/4". Now the problem, I just purchased a set of tubes, "For Greenies Only" and they are 1 7/8", my 1957 Greenie is 1 3/4". Now the question, has anyone ever enlarges the holes in the Headrest and the Base, the 1 7/8" tubes will almost slide in and it wouldn't take much with a die grinder to make a snug fit.
Do you see any problem here?

Re: Greenie Bench Tube Size
JMO, I would try to resell the tubes and purchase the ones which will fit.

Yup, precision. A die grinder?
AFAIK, Greenies had 1 3/4" way tubes and and the standard since the 10E/ER original. They also had 1 7/8" bench tubes. If you bought 4 tubes that are 1 7/8" in diameter they are not bench and way tubes. Also bench tubes are longer than way tubes
Just buy a set of 1 3/4" way tubes on eBay. They are available all the time.

Re: Greenie Bench Tube Size
Only the bench tubes are 1 7/8" and they actually start in the holes, the original 1 3/4"bench tube are way smaller than the holes, actually rather loose. My original bench tubes aren't bad, they can be sanded and repainted like original, but my way tubes are pitted baf, so I bought these not knowing not all Greenies are alike, the way tubes are the right size in this new set. Actually a reamer would be able to remove 1/32" and these 1 7/8" would fit.
Re: Greenie Bench Tube Size
Again, all Greenies are alike. If it is a Greenie then it has 1 7/8" bench tubes and 1 3/4" way tubes. Magna, Magna America, Yuba and Shopsmith (RFL now) all have the same size way tubes. This is since 1947.jjbuzard wrote:Only the bench tubes are 1 7/8" and they actually start in the holes, the original 1 3/4"bench tube are way smaller than the holes, actually rather loose. My pre-1953 stuff doesn't have 1 3/4 bench tubes. (Either do yours.)

In fact, my pre-1953 stuff has bench BOARDS!
Yes, John, I'm having fun tonight.

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Re: Greenie Bench Tube Size
No, according to another post on here they changed the bench tubes some time in the Greenie run, this IS a 1957, a friends Grand father bought it new, her husband owned it next, he owned it until 2005 and sold it to friend of his, whom I bought it from, this machine has not been basterdized. It is an original 1957. The bench tubes ARE 1 3/4" I realize I was making a bad decision on thinking about making the 1 7/8" tubes work, bad idea, I will use 1 3/4" tubes like it ORIGINAL came with.jsburger wrote:Again, all Greenies are alike. PS According to Shopsmith, Greenies were produced from 1953 to 1960.

Please re-read what I wrote. I said all have the same size WAY tubes.skou wrote:1953, not 1947jsburger wrote:Again, all Greenies are alike. You also said if it is a Greenie then it has 1 7/8" bench tubes, not true.

True. I guess that is not true.
