Quiet as a Church Mouse
A cast iron table grayling SS Band Saw. The original lower guide bearing was just a screaming/squealing. I got the upgrade bearing kit form the MS, and some cool block guides. What a simple take apart. The saws internals were really gunked up with an oily saw dust, so pulled the table for easy access to all, lower wheel, and pulled the upper wheel to grease the needle bearings. Oh by the way are those needle bearings in a race/retainer?? Or just loose? I did not pull it off completely just in case they were loose.
I got my kit from SS today, and the sun came out this afternoon and warmed up the garage, so pushed back the cocktail hour and put all in, sounds fine.
Just one thing, and have to read over the BS manual tonight, but the way the blade tracks, it turns the lower blade guide bearing with out cutting pressure. Not sure if there is an adjustment some where to change that. Going to do some evening reading in the manual about that unless some post the answer here first.

The Greatness officially starts
Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

Re: Quiet as a Church Mouse
Thanks John, saves me some reading on the SS BS manual I got from them with the bearing kit, an in house reprint, at least it looks like that, in a nice binder, but the MS needs a better printer, not very clear, kinda fussy. It was the cast iron table manual, yes old, and it is still nice the MS has that available.

Re: Quiet as a Church Mouse
The lower guide bearing does the same thing for the lower wheel that the rear guide bearing does for the upper wheel. Positions the blade to the wheel.
A unique characteristic of the SS bandsaw.

Are you sure?? I think what you wanted to say is the lower guide bearing does the same thing as the auto tracking bearing does???JPG wrote:The lower guide bearing does the same thing for the lower wheel that the rear guide bearing does for the upper wheel. Positions the blade to the wheel.

Re: Quiet as a Church Mouse
The rear guide bearing IS the 'auto track bearing' (as is the lower guide bearing). A detail(the lower one) not expressed by MS. Notice neither are adjustable in/out from the casting.ERLover wrote:Are you sure?? Re: Quiet as a Church Mouse
Those are the easy ones to adjust. Perpendicular to the blade and centered on the blade. The one on the arm is the one that takes time and finer skills.

I had to tweak that arm just a touch.
Today since we had some warm weather I felt ambitious and the last thing to do on the BS was clean up a spot on the table that was badly pitted and had that bubbly raised rust about 2.5" in diam. Something more then water must have got on it. Scraped it with a utility chisel, then hit it with the RO sander with 80, 120, 150 grit, and the whole table lightly, then 220 AO wet on a block over the whole table. Must say turned out nice. Remounted the table. OBTW waxed it also.
