I saw this Emerson motor and wondered if it would be possible to take the shaft and rotor from the Shopsmith Emerson 1 1/8 hp motor and put it into this unit. The though being that you take what is special about the Shopsmith version and make it work in a different motor. Has anyone done this? I know mounting it would require additional work, but doesn't seem impossible.

In a word NO. Many things come into play. Type of motor, motor speed, shaft size, bearing diameter, rotor construction, number of windings, winding wire size, case design and mounting method and on and on.

Question is, WHY?


No not worth the effort(which is a total unknown).

I figure as a way to get around Shopsmith's not so great choice of motor. Or maybe getting a more available motor. Not necessarily this one, but any closely designed motor. There should be an alternative to putting down the $ for a Power Pro upgrade.

I am not sure what that means. I have a 60 year old 10ER with the original motor. I have a 30+ year old that I bought new that has a perfectly good motor. I have 3 more 10ER's and a MK V with perfectly good motors.

So why is the SS motor not so great a choice? You don't have to buy a Power Pro just buy a replacement motor for the one you have.

I totally agree with John B, I have 3 ERs with the original motors, a 57ish greenie, and a 80 something grayling, all original motors. My nephew has a 54 has a 54 greenie and a Er same thing, original motors and for all of them have not done any work on the motors. Changes some cords and switches thats it other then a bit of blow the dust out.

I am referring to the Emerson 1 1/8 hp motor specifically. I've read on this forum and spoken to others that state that this is a poor quality motor in comparison to past versions. I myself have a 10er that is running great with very little tlc. I wish I could put it in my Mark V.

ANY motor built today will fail a durability test with 60 year old motor designs. They will likely win a weight/cost/efficiency test.

So the crappy part has nothing to do with the 'brand'. More so the times.

Maybe, if I read more of your postings, I would not have to ask this question. What is wrong with the Emerson motor that you already have?

Then the real question, yours. Can you reconfigure the new motor to make it compatible with your Mark V. Probably not but because the Emerson in the Mark V is a special build for Shopsmith. Emerson will not even talk to you about motor specifications on that motor, let alone sell parts to you to repair it.

That said, I am not certain that you could not mix parts from other Emerson Mark V motors to create one good one.
