I have in my possession a 1957 Magna 4" jointer, I plan to restore it, new bearings, etc and paint. Here is where my question comes in. Should I paint it Greenie, as original or Gray, as newer models. would it sell better if original or would you buy it if you had a newer Gray machine and the jointer was green?

If you can't decide and are restoring it to sell, you could give your buyer an option and then paint it their choice, leaving it in primer until sold, especially if you don't have to package and ship it, because it may be going to a Goldie owner.

I thought of that also.

I found out the shaft on the jointer was bent, about .0020, so after some careful tweaking I got it back straight, negligible bend. I also note that the couplers do not line up horizontally, I got the vertical spot on, but the side to side is off a good 1/8" and there is no adjustment that I am aware of to bring this in to alignment. See Picture. Any thoughts on this or am I missing something simple. I seem to remember the same alignment on my first jointer.

The bearing mount has large holes which provides some adjustment.

If insufficient, the SS base(end casting) can be rotated about a vertical axis on the bench tubes(loosen the two cap screws holding the bar clamp).

I do not recommend adjusting the tie bar stop set screw for this.

Far easier however is to use the eccentric mounting tubes.

After some search, I found as you suggested, the use of eccentric mounting tubes made just for jointer. When this was new, it is a Greenie jointer, they didn't offer the eccentric tubes. So I guess exact alignment wasn't a big issue.

JJ, I'm with the others, leave it primed and let the new owner choose the color of their choice.

There were not so many 'other' SPTs to accommodate. None of the existing had eccentric tubes. They are a SS Inc. thing.
