Greenie Motor just hummmms and then trips breaker

I mentioned this in an after post in a thread in Community about nephews ER.
But no one picked up on it.
He was turning a 5" diam x 20"ish piece of Ash he cut down, debarked and trimmed up to some form of roundness. During his turning he turned off his yearly 50s greenie, when went to turn it on just a humm and trip the breaker before he could shut it off, every thing turns freely by hand, today I put it in DP mode to just move the motor and shake the dust, same, just a hummmmm, tomorrow pull the covers and blow out motor, I am thinking start switch in the motor or maybe capacitor.
Thoughts??

Did he turn the speed down prior to shut off? I assume you tried to spin it under power to assist the start up... Either start switch or capacitor. If capacitor, a jump start, or helping hand, would help diagnosis the problem.

Thanks Chris, no he tried a hand roll start also, just a humm me too. I hand turned it to A speed and the same. So I guess a blow out and see tomorrow, I mean it is about 72 years old, original except maybe for belts, and as a turner, gets probably more hours then just a shop tooling guy.

This one did not pick up on it since you stated the start switch is the likely cause. That is my thought as well.

Mechanically inclined/ better then most, but not an electrical guy, unless a new switch can be bought and just replaced.??? But I have read discussions here on that I dont think a plug and play?

Nope a tweak and pray.

Most likely contact erosion and/or failing tension.

Then there is possible mechanical wear/failure of the actuator. And maybe sticking.

The 'tricky' part is getting it apart without stuff falling out and getting it back together without pinched wires etc..

Do mark the positioning of the end bells on the frame shell prior to loosening the tie screws.

Hope you have a #3 phillips screwdriver. The rest is fairly easy.
