I have been working on a new project. Just shot some pics for your viewing pleasure. All wood is 2X stock lumber.

Looks good Tom! It's not easy to get the spacing on that type of ladder. Now just how do you plan on storing it?

It is going to be permanently attached right there. I do have a large one like it in my garage that can be lifted up into the ceiling using an electric winch. That way it is out of the way 90% of the time.

Well, I have made a little progress, here are a couple of shots with all the treads in place, not fastened in yet.

Why are you alternating the width of the treads?

To make it easier to clear the intermediate step.

"intermediate step."? I'm not understanding the term.

I'd think that the alternating would make it harder to push heavy objects into the upper level.

step A (left foot)

step B (right foot)

step C (left foot) Left foot moves from A past B(intermediate step) and onto C.

Alternating tread ladder. Cool.

The main reason is DUMB GRANDKIDS who don't listen.

The reason for the width difference is the steepness of the run. It is 55 degrees, the treads are only 7" apart and going up they would have been fine, coming down, you would not normally come down a ladder facing down the ladder, you would turn and come down backwards, human nature being what it is, some one would invariably try to come down frontwards. In doing so, the exposed tread was only 4" for the heel to land on and that would not be safe, this way the whole lower tread is exposed to the whole foot. Much safer, however they still should come down facing the ladder. I will put a sign at the top to go down backwards.

Items can be lifted up over the loft rail from a conventional ladder when needed.
