To Hang or Not to Hang?

Awhile back I posted the under Shopsmith Cabinets I made, now after some time has passed, I am beginning to think I should hang the cabinet from the Bench Tubes, as I move it around, the cabinets gets in the way, I am thinking it would be better to hang it and when I move my Shopsmith the cabinet moves with it, lets hear some Pro and Con.

Ya get it both ways.

Size the hangers so it rises off the floor when the SS is raised.

Or quick disconnect nest so it is captive until disconnected.

I'd be skeered of messing up the tubes. Maybe some sort of attachment that lets it roll with the unit.

I would hang it, and while down there, upgrade the casters to the newer polyurethane ones. Not necessarily the larger ones (more work to change them over), you can get the poly ones that are the same size and are a direct replacement. I got mine from Shopsmith.

I've made several versions of the under shopsmith storage units. The first was pretty much the one that shopsmith displayed back in the day. It hung off the bench tubes.

Version 2 was intended as an upgrade to the design and it two was designed to hang. However by then it was apparent that my days of actually working on larger projects inside the garage/shop were coming to an end. I did the design with the ears but cut them off before finishing the project.

With the hanging cabinet I was not able to take the machine outside to the driveway as it would "bottom out" on the way out. Since this was a removable cabinet I did briefly think about the option of a slight redesign with the ears attached to the top bracket so it was able to slide out without having to lift the shopsmith over the ears....

I still have this cabinet and use it under the shopsmith that I have set up as a drill press. It doesn't move about so being attached or not really doesn't matter.

I did get two of the three red cabinets shopsmith use to sell with the intention of getting the third one someday.... well they stopped selling them and I never did get the third one. Now I have the two under my moveable shopsmith but with the lift assist one has to be rotated 90 degrees to fit. I have to roll them out from under to move the shopsmith out of the garage so I'm glad they are independent. The single cabinets are easier to move and while I don't love the fact that they both can't be forward facing I still haven't done anything about it.

When I did my next design I went with 4 cabinets that can be fastened together or left separate, any combinations are possible, one and three, two and two, three and one etc. I have sense re-purposed these to be a two high by two wide unit that fits under the drill pressed shopsmith main table. The shopsmith that these were under still retains the 4 single high drawer array that hangs on the bench tubes but hangs down only 4" and has clips that let me take it on/off in seconds. This is the only attached shelf unit I have now.

When I did have the shelf attached I did not notice any ill effects to the machine. I did find having it attached made it that much harder to move around and as I mentioned impossible to wheel out to the driveway. I don't see any cases that I would again attach a full under shelf system to any of my machines. For me it was more work then it was worth.

Hang them! I say! Hang them high and hang them long!
Oh I was practicing for jury duty! sorry!

Not real sure hanging them is a good idea. Seems like being separate and mounted on wheels makes them more versatile.

I have just finished the four under cabinets for the SS's and have had the same weight concern. If the casting where the tubes join the ends is beefy enough is of concern. I think if the castings can hold up it really adds to the stability of the unit to leave them hanging. Once fully loaded I think one of these could wiegh in the 100-200 lb range. I think I am willing to risk it to gain the stability it adds to the whole unit. It would be easy to add strips on the bottom so when the unit is down the weight would be off the unit. I guess only time will tell.
