on Facebook and Youtube, Brian Gidney (Summers Woodworking) is hosting a 2 X 4 challenge. Build something with only one 2 X 4, film the build and enter by Oct. 15th.
This will be my entry, video to follow soon. I decided to make this a Shopsmith only build (except for the drum sanding)!
Three 18 segment rings, solid (Glued up) bottom, I used about 32 inches of a 2 X 4!
2 x 4 challenge!

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

You can do pretty much anything you wish. With all the glue joints, i was hesitant to try any dyes. There are a few gaps between the rings, very slight. Douglas Fir (at least a assume it's fir) likes to move a bit!

And you must have about 66" of 2x4 left over. Plenty for a matching plate, goblet, salad bowl, and maybe a serving spoon and fork. An entire place setting should really give those judges something to think about!

Save some of the chip/dust for the gaps and mix with wood glue or Supper Glue, pack in, let dry and sand out the excess.ChrisNeilan wrote:You can do pretty much anything you wish. If this was a favored piece, I would do just that, but i think i'll leave it as is for now. Kinda rustic. I'm working on a feature piece for my Rotary Club- i'll be much pickier with that!

Really nice work for a cut up, glued up and turned 2 X 4. Just lacquer or shellac and it will dazzle someone. LOL

I had brief thought of that 2x4 idea lately when finishing the small cherry case I made for my niece. The back utilized a bunch of lapped boards all resawn out of a single stubby 2x4:
