Lonely in DeKalb

Went to the shopsmith demo in DeKalb, IL this afternoon. I ended up talking to Mike for an hour and no one else showed up. Not that I needed a demo but it's nice to see Mike work a crowd or at least give a demo. Wasn't in the cards today but we did have a nice talk. I had a very modest order that I placed so at least there was that.

I hope the next couple of days gets some more people in to see the demo and perchance spend some money....... My fear is that they might just start skipping my area due to lack of sales.

So if you live in the area get out there if you can we don't want Mike to feel lonely now do we.

Not good news on that front. He has new equipment for the demo except the jointer which the perpetrators left in the rain filled gutter to rust.... he has cleaned that up and it looks pretty good. They even got the banner for the demo but he had new ones made and they arrived while I was there.

I think he said he only missed one event due to this. He also lost personal item/tools he had for years so it was more then just the stuff we see at a demo.

Sad.

This is at least the second time that the Shopsmith van has been pilfered at a show. The other time that I know of happened with Rick Davis' van, after a show here in Tucson if I remember correctly.

Maybe it is time to equipment the van with some sort of security system/alarm.

The "new" van is a commercial van with special locks and security system. It is just a plain white not with any shopsmith banners or labels. Not clear what the other one had by way of this.

When we would go to trade shows/tests sites we could have a couple of million $ worth of equipment in a van. Not stuff that people could use or sell for the most part, yes some tools etc but most of it was electronics we had developed so other then value to us that was about it. How ever you could not assume it to be safe from vandals or corporate envy so we rented rooms at places that had secure parking. I'd think about doing that if I had a truck full of tools depending on where I was........ like Chicago.

Mike mentioned the other theft, he was there too, just not his van. They did get a call like 4 months later from a strip mall asking when they were going to move the shopsmith van. It was of course stripped.

He also mentioned the powerpro had the lock code set. So if we get any questions here how to override that we might not want to answer here, let them go to shopsmith to determine if it might be the missing machine.......

Ya having signage on a van or truck is like hanging a Bulls Eye on it!!! Especially if they know where you are and for what time.
