I have one 12" disk for sand paper and already tried to put a new sticky one on without out great success. It bubbled up in the middle after a few days. I peeled and scraped it off and just ordered the Velcro sanding package.

Now, I am afraid to install the Velcro portion as I don't want the same outcome as my previous attempt.

I used some Goop removal to assist in cleaning the disk. I also used some of the old sandpaper that I just removed as it was still new.

What are "we" supposed to do to prep the disk and how should I properly install the Velcro?

I am trying to find a second disk on CL locally without out success as I still have a few of the big grit sticky type.

I found that for me the best solution was to have a whole collection of disks as in spend a lot of money to get so I could keep the various grits each on its own disk.

While the sanding disks are now self adhesive (PSA) I still found it hard to remove them and stick to the backing and then reuse them. It works sometime and other times I've had trouble getting them to stick well enough for the next use. Some people seem to be able to do this but I'm not one of them. So for me I just stick it on and use it up then replace.

I did add the velcro system so add another disk for that. Yes the velcro has stayed in place so I guess I must have cleaned the disk well enough, mineral sprites as I recall. I also used some alcohol pad which either came with the kit or perhaps I had from some other like project.

Now while it is easy to replace sanding disk on the velcro it also gives a different issue to some projects. The disk in now soft so it tends to give a "rounding" finish rather then the crisp edges from the disks. In some cases it's OK and well for me in other cases I didn't like it. I'd say that very close to all my sanding is done without the use of the velcro system........

The other issue which I have not had but when I loaned out a sander it came back with the velcro melted. The person got to aggressive and heat is not velcro friend. So it cost me $$ to have to replace the pad. I can see this happening on the shopsmith if one was not careful.

Perhaps this is more then you ask for but I just wanted you to know that the velcro system is not as wonderful as the description might have lead you to believe. It is an add on rather then replacement in my book.

In addition if you use these disks for sharpening you might want a disk just for that so keep that in mind, the velcro will not work for sharpening.

I like how you mounted the disks. Would that idea work well for the saw blades also? I have mine on a bench close to touching each other. One is in a cardboard box for protection. I like your idea.

Yes it will. I have both my saw blades and sanding disks mounted in a similar way as Ed's arrangement.
