New Strip Sander

Received a new Shopsmith strip sander Monday and thought I would try it today. I've called Shopsmith already but they have to have a tech call me back. First piece of luan scroll work to be sanded and the belt stops turning. Looking it over I find the lower drive wheel is spinning on the shaft. There isn't a pin or a set screw hole to be found. Maybe it was suppose to be pressed on but it doesn't work. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem.

Same order I bought the scroll saw upgrade and the lower blade clamp is missing the thumb screw. I looked a few minutes ago and it shows shipped.

I was really disappointed with the difference in quality of the original foot and guard assembly vs the new one. I tried it out and the I really like the up front release and the thumb screw. Anyone having problems with the plastic up front release or significant wear.

I have the newer version of the scroll saw, and although it doesn't get a ton of use, I have not seen any wear problems on the frt adjustments (I do find them handy to have).

Just looked at my strip sander - I don;t see any fasteners, it appears the lower wheel is pressed onto the shaft.

Thanks Ed. I've always been happy with Shopsmith fixing new equipment with issues. Just hope it's the only one they have with a problem.

I just did a picture frame with around 80 inside cuts and the front release saved me a lot of time. I used to have to get up off the stool for each blade change to loosen the rear tension knob and again to tighten it.

Wow, sounds like you give your machine ay more of a workout that I do! Mine gets used for making Christmas ornaments and toys for the grandkids..

Have you and shopsmith connected to resolve this? Haven't been out to look at mine but it seems like a factory defect from the description. Have to wonder how this could happen, should have been obvious when it was put together.

Anyway please let us know the resolution.

reible: I haven't received the lower drive wheel yet. With Shopsmith you just have to get to the right person. My last conversation was with Gail on Thursday. She was very helpful and said she would send the lower wheel assembly out right away. She did give me the option of another strip sander but it would have to be built. Definitely a factory defect.

I received the thumb screw for the scroll saw upgrade Friday. I couldn't screw the thumb screw into the lower block assembly without having to dress the threads at the end where it was ground flat.

ecom1: Nice ornaments and stocking stuffers. Have had the scroll saw for a long time but only used a little bit until now. Just couldn't stop on the picture frame once I got started.

I got the drive wheel yesterday. I put it on this morning and works good. Less than 10 minutes to replace. Will post a picture after Xmas.

I have 3 strip sanders and no problems. I have has issues in the past but shop smith company has always backed up their equipment and even more at times. Other than having to wait a long time to get parts I have only good things to say about the company.
