DNA tests What we are doing for Christmas this year.

DNA tests What we are doing for Christmas this year.
I've been interested for a while now and figured I'd better get on it before I'm too old to be interested anymore. It will be fun to see if anything we thought was wrong..... from my research and family history.
It will also be nice to share with our children and grand children too.
So you spend some $$, spit in a tube and send it off, reasonable painless then of course there is the wait, 6 to 8 weeks or perhaps longer since the kits were on sale recently and depending on how well the sale went.......
Anyone else here do this?

We did this last year - it has been quite illuminating!
I've always been told that my dad's side was 100% Irish, and according to the DNA I have 7% Irish! Through ancestry work I've found a fair amount of Irish (certainly not 50%), but I believe the DNA goes way back not just the last 200-300 years. I also have according to DNA quite a bit of Siberian Peninsula ancestry, but I can't confirm this in my family tree.
But, I was BORN in California, I was RAISED in Vermont (6 months - 18 years), then 20 years Active duty, then the last 30+ years in Alaska. Someone looking at simple family tree info 200 years from now would say I'm from California, but I don't look at it that way!
Have fun!
Steve

A couple of us in the family are going to do this just for curiosity. Our son-in-law does not know who his father is, so we are getting a kit for him. I have been told all my life that I am of English descent, but I know that some of the women are Scotts and Irish. So, it is going to be interesting.

My results are in. And the expected unexpected showed up.
From family history and the research I have done I expected to mostly Western Europe and Irish. Well I am but most of my DNA points to Great Britain! Now I'm not talking a little but 65%! Followed by the two expected results at 19% and 13%. Then another unexpected result was Scandinavia at a trace of 3%.
Still waiting of the wife's results to see what unexpected results will show up.

Been there doing that too.... lots of family tree history research done long before the DNA and we found a good bit of dna data supporting it.
In Ancestry my linage according to DNA: Ireland 45%, Europe West 21%, Great Britain 19%, Scandinavia 9%, Trace Regions 4%
I can trace some lines back to 1705 in Zurich, Switzerland, and one of the Swiss families back to 1560 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
I am also a Find-A-Grave volunteer.

My oldest grand daughter came to us a few weeks ago and asked if we would participate. Several of us, don't know how many, are doing it. The report is due end of next month.
I expect this to be a real eye opener for me. My side of the family has been almost silent on our heritage and those who do speak out don't agree.

I"m a bit suspicious of this DNA testing to determine ethnic origin. The technology is still too new to trust it. I'm betting that if you wait 10-20 years and run the same tests, you will get different results as the testing and interpreting the results improves.
We live in a world today filled with "experts", and many of them are wrong most of the time. Keeping that in mind, don't trust anything if you can't see it yourself.

Re: DNA tests What we are doing for Christmas this year.
There will be more known for certain but our DNA is recorded and doesn't change.
What does is the number of people who have contributed to the databases
What surprises me is that so many people test their DNA but never attach a family tree so folks can connect and further refine the breadth of knowledge of where we come from and how we are related.
I encourage folks to share that too, but hide personally identifying info for living persons. There is still a way to email and connect with family if both wish to.
