My third Shopsmith purchase was a unit that had a band saw. The unit itself had been dripped on and was in bad shape. The band saw wasn't in too bad of shape so I went ahead and bought it figuring, aside from the band saw, I may be able to use some of the other parts for my other units. Besides the price wasn't bad, $75.

When I went to pick it up I couldn't even disassemble it as the tubes had rusted into the headstock and both ends. I had to shove it in my van whole. With effort and heat I ultimately got it all apart and then started to rework it in my spare time. I also rewired the headstock to be reversible so I could run SPT's on both ends. Below are some pictures of the process. I've seen restorations here that are absolutely gorgeous, Mickyd's restoration for example. This one isn't in that category but I'm really happy with the way it came out. - Nick

JPG - Thanks for the reminder / help. The jigsaw is unusual compared to other SPT's in that, due to the cam motion, it can be rotated in either direction. I had the jigsaw mounted on the head end of my Greenie when making Christmas ornaments a few weeks ago. You can see it in the picture above where the repainted legs are up against my Greenie.

Joedw00 - I used Rust-O-Leum Hammered Grey paint from a rattle can. I used acetone to prep the surface after sand blasting. The finished look and texture is quite good, I thought. One shortfall, I had to aggressively sand blast to remove the rust. In doing so, I also removed all the little 'bumps' that are in the paint from the factory. So the finish is a little different than factory but, to me, quite acceptable.
