Last summer when I was in the Woodcraft store a guy came in to get some Festool rails. I over heard most of the conversation, the guy was a contractor and had stopped to get some wood for a customers project, he had gone to one of the big box stores. Went in and got his wood then came back out to find that..... while he had been in the store someone had stolen his Festool rails off the top carrier. We are talking a lot of $$ here.
He was mentioning this on going problem where thieves are so bold as to shop trucks for tools on the job site even. Years ago when I worked on such projects it was the bosses pickup with tools and it was unlocked and even had tools setting here and there in plain sight and no one ever thought about it. Now if you were to do that, well you would be without tools.
I don't know how well this system would work but it better then nothing at all. As a home owner hobbyist I don't see spending the money but for a contractor it might be worth it. I wonder if insurance companies might someday require such a system or well perhaps a more improved version.

It's interesting that Milwaukee isn't even promoting this as security against theft but as more a management tool. This must represent a serious investment on Milwaukee's part to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Will it be useful to construction professionals? I have no idea, but I'll bet others here will.

If you watch the video there is a section towards the end where security is mentioned.

Our company has used a barcode inventory system for small tools for years. Tools are scanned out to a projects. Some projects have used the system for tracking distribution from the tool crib to each craftsman by scanning the bar code in their hardhat. We utilize barcodes in place of a "brass" employee tracking system as well. No mention that I know of to switching to RFID but sounds like an interesting idea.

Here's an independent review. I'm impressed by the configuration capabilities.
