Busy two days in the shop

Post by masonsailor2 »

The boss has designed a table for a backgammon set and I started on it yesterday. It will be Honduran mahogany, paduak and maple for accent. The legs were the first part so yesterday I made the template from the drawing, milled up the wood and laminated them. Today was trim them to size and router them. Now for the base and top. Also an added suprise today the power pro upgrade arrived !

I'd be interested on your assessment of the Power Pro - I see a 520 upgrade in the new future for me, and I'm contemplating the PP with double tilt.

I know you will be busy for a few days with that new toy but when you have time can you elaborate a little on your method for laying out those legs with the nails and scribe? Its looking good and I am anxious to see the finished project!

I be guessing nails at a measured distance from the 'center' line along those 'cross' lines.

Then that thin strip of wood bent to the nails.(notice the 'outside' location of the top nail compared to the 'inside' location of the other nails)

Finally the pencil line drawn along inner edge of the now curved thin strip.

THEN the compass used to trace a line the fixed compass distance from the first line.

You were pretty much right on JPG. That is my layout method for making curved templates. The compass also is used to create a dotted line at the specified distance from the first line and that allows me to make sure the nails and the wooden strip on the second line exactly match the curve of the second line. It's a very quick and accurate method to create a template. Made some progress today on it. I will post more pics tomorrow.

Well it's raining here today in Vegas so a good shop day. I will get the power pro upgrade done today and continue with the table. Yesterday I managed to get the legs cut to size, make thefirst level of the base and mortise the legs to it. There will be two more levels to the base which I will hopefully get done today.
