I just noticed that at the headstock where the shaft comes out there is a aluminum ring behind the coupler
Well somebody has filled the sets crew hole with JB weld
Now what ?

Those are traditionally filled with a putty that hardens, and painted over at the factory. Get a small dental pick or suitable substitute and scratch it out cleaning out the threads as you go. It likely is not JB Weld. You will find it even in the quill assembly threads on many.

Unless you have a pressing need to get at that set screw I wouldn't worry about it. On the older machines that "filling" was done to set screws one normally didn't need to access. In the later years they stopped doing so for what ever reason.

With them filled you are less likely to do something dumb when you are new to shopsmith and don't know any better. When it comes time to have to access the set screw do as was indicated, it not as much work as it might sound. By then you will know more of what you are doing so you probably don't have to fill it again afterwards.

That "somebody" was Shopsmith when they built it. If you need to take it apart, you have to dig it out.

Heed what Ed has said. Especially the one in the collar. It is all too easy to unintentionally loosen it instead of the arbor set screw.

Modeling clay(kids stuff) works as well to discourage an OPPS and is easier to get out when access is needed.

BTW when you discover the vertical lock screw does not align with the center of the dimple, be assured that is supposed to be that way.
