Confession

Post by ChrisNeilan »

Forgive me forum members for I have sinned. It has been three years since I have last oiled my Mark V! I realized this as I was installing an EBAY upgrade
main table and carriage. It has also been three years since I have changed the speed, as it has only been used as a bandsaw and drill press station. With the new table (and fence and saw guard I just ordered from Ebay after a very nice Jefferson Reserve bourbon)This machine is going to supplement the Mark 7 beautifully!
Peace!

I wonder if not changing speeds lessens the need for lubrication. I'm sure several people here know the answer off the tops of their heads.

I believe you and I may have bee looking at some of the same eBay upgrade parts -- I just missed a full 520 upgrade package last weekend (got the ok from the wife and then it was gone!), but this week I found a 520 main table and also 2 floating and 1 fixed extension tables. I'm still in need of a 520 fence (anyone here have a spare they'd be willing to sell?). I also was looking at the upper / lower saw guards offered by the same seller, and looks like the lower guard has sold - I'm assuming that was you :-)

Anyways, back to your question ...

You could always just pull the headstock apart for a thorough cleaning/inspection/lubing (some parts get oil, some get silicon).

Sawdust sessions 22/23 give you a video lesson on how to do this, and it can be done in a few hours as long as you can make the jig to hold down the spring that holds the floating sheave in place - a small piece of scrap plywood is what I used.

And for your sin you will: Cut 3 bad ft of lumber, turn 1 pen, and make 1/2 lb of sawdust now go in peace!

All shall be forgiven but ONLY after you have done a thorough clean, wax and lubricate.

I doubt that any damage has been done so long as there has been no rust developing in those dry spots that should never be dry. Only a good lubrication will tell you for sure. Do not be afraid to "over oil" for that cannot be done.

According to the universal shopsmith owners agreement section 7 sub-section 21B paragraph 4: "Any user failing to lubricate his or her machine less then 2 years and 9 months since the last lubrication will be subject to forfeiture of the said machine."

Paragraph 5 continues: "Said machine shall be deemed not appreciated enough and subject to one or more penalty(ies) for said neglect. See section 14 subsection 8 for more details."

Section 14 subsection 8: "Forfeiture and penalties" "Said machine shall be forfeited to the person finding and quoting this section and announcing the owners neglect to the other owners." "As a penalty the derelict owner shall surrender said machine with in one week of this notice." "Said machine shall be delivered along with all accessories within 10 days." The new owner will not be responsible for any costs associated, with the transportation of said machine, those costs are to be the responsibility of the previous owner." "For cases were the shopsmith is worth less then $500 US dollars see section 19 subsection 9."

Section 19 subsection 9: "For shopsmith units worth less then $500 it is acceptable for a compromise between the parties and a cash amount of $300 be given in lieu of transference of said shopsmith providing and if the scheduled maintenance is done within 1 week of this notice."

Binding as this agreement is I have no room for another shopsmith so just send the $300 to a charity of your choice and get that maintenance done and we can call this a learning opportunity.

Harsh Ed. But I'm afraid Chris the law is the law. You can appeal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. :D

Only the 9th court if you are very liberal with the lubrication. Probably not the best place for someone who has been ultra-conservative with maintenance the past three years.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them. :)
