Thoughts experiences on repair shop

He seems nice over the phone. Actually an official Shopsmith endorsed repair shop/woodworking training facility which is quite rare these days.

I was wondering if anyone on the forums had any experience using him for advice/repairs.

I was thinking of repairing/rehauling the headstock myself, but the two year warranty, the official Shopsmith endorsement and the decades of repair experience piqued my interest.

At least he can tell me if there is anything wrong with my headstock that needs replacement.

There isn't one. I get the sense that it is along the lines of why don't you bring it in the shop and we'll see if you need anything done and if anything is needed, I'll get a quote for you going. Seems like he will sit down and answer all questions without really any fee. Sort of like having a conversation with some of you guys in the forum with the advantage that he can see and diagnose issues in person and then has the parts/expertise to fix it right then and there. He's local so I could talk to him in person and save a bit on shipping/handling.

I do like that he diverges a little bit from pure factory parts such as sealed bearings vs. non-sealed.

My son bought a used SS in the Norfolk VA area about two years ago. He disassembled it and took all the parts with bearings over to Jacob Anderson in Virginia Beach. Jacob replaced all the bearings for less than $200 in less 30 minutes. He stayed much longer talking. Since my son disassembled and reassembled his machine, most of his cost was for the actual bearings instead of labor. I believe he said labor cost was about the same as for a car mechanic per hour. Hope this will at least give you an idea of costs.

Thanks all for the information. I have been watching jacob's videos for awhile and they are great and informative. I would rather physically bring my unit to someone vs ship back and forth if possible.

I likely will try the Official Shopsmith guy. Seems like a good guy and it will be time well spent I think if he can get it back to factory specs.

I was hoping for one good testimonial so maybe I end up being a testimonial.

I do agree, beeg. Official normally denotes direct association and I doubt that exists. Yes, he was official for a long time and probably has the skill and knowledge of an official representative. However, if he does good work and reasonable price, does that matter.
