Clanging noise when approaching high speed on speed dial

When cranking my speed dial towards high speed it is hitting something and making a loud noise.
I took speed control knob off and loosened the nut and turned the set screw in or out I seem to get the same results. I did take the gear off first. Do I need to loosen the 3 machine screws for any reason?
The belts are wide enough and in good shape.
Anyone have any ideas? It is a greenie and 3/4 motor.
Will the sheves on motor fit onto a 1 1/8 hp motor with no problem if I need to switch it? The end button came off my 1 1/8 motor so maybe I can change them out?

First the motor questions - sheaves are identical, motor shaft varies, oldest ones have a threaded shaft with a left hand threaded nut, newer ones have a retaining ring with either a cup or a washer retaining the spring.

What do you mean by 'end button'?

No need to mess with the threes screws unless you are removing the speed control.

Blindly adjusting the high speed stop screw is not a good idea. search for high speed adjustment procedure.

First determine the source/cause of the noise. It may be caused by a badly worn control sheave.

noise only happens on high end of speed area. Did not see any wear on the clip where attaches to speed control to sheeve. Reason I played with set screw is I saw a video where it was out towards operator and this one is 1/16 or so below the nut. I looked for speed control procedure and did not get a site.

The wear I alluded to was the bore and the idler shaft which can cause the sheave to 'wobble'.

Thanks will check for wear tomorrow. When turning crank towards the highest speed is when I get the noise on the high end not any before like it is hitting the sheave. If I stop motor before it hits then how will I know when the nut should be loosened and the set screw adjusted?

I loosened the nut and screwed the allen screw in and it kept the part from hitting and the noise left. Tightened back the nut and it seemed to work. Thanks for the help!!

You just moved the high speed stop.

I suggest you perform the entire 'High Speed Adjustment' procedure.
