My 520 started singing today.

My 520 started singing today.
OK I'm stupid sometimes. I should be old enough to know that no good deed goes unpunished.
I let my neighbor use my 520 today. When I got back to the shop he was just finishing. He said the saw bound up and tripped the breaker a "few" times. Bottom line now I have a singing saw blade when I turn off my saw. I am guessing that he burned a bearing and now I have a harmonic vibration in my blade. It seems to run normally and the speed change is smooth so all I have to deal with now is the blade singing after it stops. It's like I installed a tuning fork in my Shopsmith.
That wordey explanation was a lead in to a question. I am assuming it is bearings so how hard is it to get those changed out before it becomes a real issue? Is it something a local shop could do or will I need to send it off somewhere? Does it sound like I will need a complete rebuild? I am fairly sure the motor did get a little war. but other than the harmonic it seems to be OK.

Re: My 520 started singing today.
It might well just be the blade. Got another one to put on and test with?

I agree, he likely got it very hot and warped it(the blade) slightly.
What was he sawing, and what do the sawn edges look like?

I tried a different blade and got the same song.
He was ripping a couple of 12 foot soaking wet 2x4s and putting a 20 degree bevel on them.

Re: My 520 started singing today.
Well that is too bad. It is hard to tell just what got messed up, it could be quill bearings or bearing or it could be a bent shaft, I know you said you have a 520 but there are two quills types, an older single bearing and then a newer two bearing. The single bearing quill is easy to replace the bearings, the two bearing quill comes in different flavors and the oldest two piece ones are not desirable...... bearing replacement or not.
So if you want to get back up and running with out a bunch of other guessing I'd say you need a new quill, about $180 plus shipping. Billed to the ex-friend??
Other wise it is pulling the quill and disassembling and find just what you have and go from there.

Re: My 520 started singing today.
I didn't think about the quill being the problem. I just assumed he over taxed the motor and burned the bearings. He said he tripped the breaker "several" times when he bound up the blade. I know the motor got very hot in the process so motor bearings seemed logical at the time. Now that you mentioned the quill it does make more sense because the blade is not connected to the motor directly so it could not be the source of the harmonic. The quill as the source seems more logical as the vibration/harmonic source. I also suspect the quill on another post I had about blade position being too far to the left in the blade insert. With the blade in and everything locked down the blade almost rub the left side of the blade insert. I know the quill was removed once when I got the machine because of some burrs on outside of the quill causing it to hang up.
Now I need to find some good instructions on proper disassembly, assembly, installation and calibration on the quill.
Thanks for the suggestion. Time to do a little research on the quill. Do you know where I can find some good instructions on rebuilding a quill?

Right here!!! You got the best of the best!!! and the SS rebuild videos. JPG, John Burger and a few others eat and sleep with there SS, rebuilt many, know more about them then SS CS.dynabase wrote:I didn't think about the quill being the problem. Just ask here.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

Re: My 520 started singing today.
Binding up the blade and stalling the motor will not "over tax" the quill bearings. When the blade stalls the bearings bearings stop turning. The motor still turns (maybe) but at a slower speed because the load has increased and then the breaker trips. That heats up the windings and can effect/compromise them but if the motor still runs all is well for now. It may effect the longevity of the motor however.dynabase wrote:I didn't think about the quill being the problem. I just assumed he over taxed the motor and burned the bearings. If the blade stalled the motor pulley probably spun on the belt before the breaker tripped. I would look at the belts first.

My bet is the wash machine bearing might have went, in MHO the weakest link.
I doubt it is in the quill. Time will tell.
