A spare jointer(total shop?) would work better1mbcabinetmaker wrote:Thanks JPG. I'm trying to figure out a dedicated drill press set up on a very short setup and while jsburger's setup looks impressive I'm not sure I would like the leg out in front of the table. Right now I'm thinking of just using my spare band saw as a counter balance on about a 36" foot print.
I thought about it at the time I was contemplating how I wanted to build it but in practice it has not been a problem for me. When I stand at the drill press my right leg/foot is off to the side of the leg. My right foot fits through the arched cut out in the leg. I actually never thought about it when the unit was complete. I just walk up to it and use it. I have never thought that I wished the leg were not there. Of course that might not be the case for you.mbcabinetmaker wrote:Thanks JPG. I just remembered another thought I had when building it. The bench tubes are the 18" pieces I cut off to make my shorty. I used them as is because I had them. I remember thinking that if the leg was a real problem I could cut 6" or so off them to move the leg back.
You are probably right.robinson46176 wrote:jsburger wrote:I thought about it at the time I was contemplating how I wanted to build it but in practice it has not been a problem for me. Now that it has been brought up for discussion you will feel awkward the next time you walk up to it...![]()

Will 15" work? I have a set you can have it they will. Stevembcabinetmaker wrote:Due to space restraints I have decided to go Johns way with the dedicated drill press and try to shorten the leg a couple of inches.
Anyone have a couple of 16" tubes they don't need?
