I am dong segmented settings and wanted to add something on the miter gage that would allow me to hold the narrow pieces closet to the blade My fingers are scared. Has anyone come up with a solution to holding the last piece cut closet to the blade. Thanks Larry

I'd use the band saw.

Might make a sled. Miter Guage is not the tool for that last short piece.

As has been stated, not the best way to cut that last piece, and yes, we all occasionally do it! A sled is best, but if you have to attach a backer board to the miter gauge and use some kind of a clamp (think toggle clamp) to hold it securely to that board. As always, use extreme caution if your finger are anywhere close to that blade.

This "sled" is really simple to make and use and while the post is from back in 2007 it is still relevant. I still use this when needed and it might well suit your needs as well.

I am not sure the table saw with out a sled is the ideal tool for the job. JMO

I have a small electric miter box ,,,,and still prefer a hand miter box or band saw like mentioned for some stock , then touch it up on the disc sander,,,, or belt sander .

I agree Ed and Hobbyman. Definitely make a sled. A simple sled attached to the miter will do fine. Make the sled out of 3/4" material which is stiff enough to screw a hold down to to hold that last piece so your fingers are far from the blade. You can make a very effective hold down with a tnut, knob or wing nut, 3/8 bolt and some scrap wood. These can be screwed to your sled or bench. Make several as you will find lots of uses for them.

pretty handy jig , have you thought about using one like it with t-track?

Here is my solution to my problem. I took a Harbor freight 4 inch clamp and cut off the foot attaching the clamp shaft to a piece of angle iron and attached the angel iron to the fence on my Shopsmith sled. This allow the clamp to clear the blade by 3/8 of an inch keeping my finger away from the blade. It looks like it should work well. I will try it out in the next few days. Thanks for the advice. Larry
