Drum Sander Vacuum Attachment

I purchased the drum sander vacuum attachment but am having trouble using it.

I have a 520.

When I insert the drum sander attachment (plate/vac attach) into the table when the shopsmith is still in the horizontal position, I cannot tilt the table to use as a drill press as it hits the plastic guard underneath the table.

I tried removing the two screws and removing the plastic guard but that did not help as there is a metal cross beam behind.

If I put the SS in the vertical position I can then install the plate but cannot tilt.

Am I using it correctly; I can only install the plate/attach after I put the machine in the vertical position?

If I understand what you are asking, you need to have the table orientated for use in the drill press mode to attach the drum sanding insert with dust chute. As for the plastic guard that is screwed on to the cross brace, I cut a "U" shaped notch in the top so the dust chute slides through it. That way you don't have to take it off. The only thing that is exposed in other operations is the saw arbors which I don't see as a safety concern. I would attach a pic but am having technology problems.

You are using it correctly. If you have the one with the angle attached it has to be removed to flip the table. If you have the short one then it will just fit if you loosen the insert.

The tie bar guard has to be removed. That is not only a guard but it also controls sawdust when sawing. It's just two screws so no big deal.

Thank you. I thought I was modifying in an unsafe manner. I did not see instructions for it; so it must have been assumed.
