Another Dust Collection Quandary For the Experts

It was to be a simple purchase. Call JDS and order a 1.5 HP dust force with two 4" ports 110 volt unit job done. To my chagrin they no longer sell dust collectors or air cleaners! :mad:

So I have been mulling this over and looking at options. With the new MARK 7 my Festool vac has been filling up at least once a week at $10.00 a pop dumping and replacing the bag. That's only half the problem because I have a shark guard coming that will need an additional 2.5" vac line.

I really want a dust collector with a canister top an have found this unit: http://www.baileigh.com/bag-dust-collector-dc-1300b

With the option of adding a canister for $156.00

The problem is it only has one 4" inlet. So do you think that I could split it at the unit and use two 2.5" hoses on the one 4" inlet or am I better off to go with this unit that has two 4" inlets that would both be reduced to 2.5" https://www.amazon.com/RIKON-Power-Tool ... +collector

Other options are on the table but I have ruled out Jet and Powermatic units because of the way the lower bag is installed. I had one of those and hated it! :rolleyes:

If you look at all the dust collectors of that style with 1 1/2HP motors with a few exceptions they all look the same. Like they were all made in the same factory regardless of brand. They all have a 1200-1300 CFM rating. That is the important number. So if one comes with only one 4" inlet then just put a 4" Y on it and you have two inlets.

When I had my JDS Dust Force I only used one port for the SS with the Shark Guard. The long branch with the elbow went to the Shark Guard and the short branch went to the lower saw guard. Then there was a 4" line to the JDS.

I have one of the HF dust collectors which has been very reliable. The cfm is adequate for a small shop and it accepts large black contractor trash bags bags from HD. I have been running it for about three years with no issues.

The difference in the two units is that the Rikon has a 6" intake converted to two 4" intakes whereas the Baileigh is just a single 4". Both are basically the same CFM. I just don't know how to do the math to determine which would be the better option to convert to two 2.5" intakes.

The math is the volume of the hose diameter which is directly proportional to the area in SqIn. of the diameter.

The JDS as I remember was a 5" inlet with a 4" Y. The issue is the area of a circle, the diameter of the inlet.

Here are the areas of the different size inlets/hoses.

Diameter Area/SqIn

6" 28.26
5" 19.63
4" 12.56
2 1/2" 4.90

A 6" converted to two 4" works. A single 4" will not convert two 4" inlets unless you converter them to two 2 1/2" inlets. Then it should work fine. In a home shop not subject to EPA regulations I suspect you will be fine with any of the DC's on the market.

Two 2.5" is smaller than one 4" in area.

Two 4" is only slightly smaller than a 6" in area.

Same cfm tells me it doesn't matter(6" vs 4")

Realize the cfm will halve in each port when two 4" is used with the 6" port.

Two 2.5" connected to a single 4" will almost have the same cfm as those two 4"(which means higher velocity in the 2.5")

All this ignores possible static pressure effects.

i.e. Assume a velocity at a 6" port at a given cfm.
The velocity at a 4" port with the same cfm will be 2.25 times greater.

Since the cfm will be split between two 2.5" ports in either case, but the velocity will increase by about 1 1/4 due to the reduction in area.

Since we are ignoring static pressure effects it will not be a dramatic a difference.

I would ignore port size when the cfm is the same since the 'ducts' will be something different.

The kicker is what are those duct lengths going to be. The shorter the smaller ones are the better.

The shorter all ducts are the better.

Static pressure changes will kill effectiveness.

Small ducts have greater static pressure losses than larger ducts.

The trade offs are for given cfm, a smaller duct will have greater velocity, but will also have greater static pressure degradation which will decrease the cfm which will decrease the velocity . . .

Yes it is a vicious circle.

I think I will go with the Baileigh. I called them this morning and got a real person on the phone that had actual knowledge of the product. :eek:

Delta 50-767; 1500 CFM, Dual 4 in ports -- be sure to add an upstream trash can with cyclone top so you rarely have to empty the bag...
