New guy with his first Shopsmith

Post by cmn135 »

Hello everyone. After months of watching Craigslist I finally found what I think is a great deal I couldn't pass up. Let me know what you think...I will try to load up some pictures later.

I picked up an early 80's Shopsmith Mark V package for $500. I think I got an incredible deal as the previous owner only listed half of what it had with it.

I am the third owner, the person I bought it from inherited it from his step father and it appears to be very well cared for. It was advertised with table saw, jigsaw, bandsaw and jointer, belt sander and planer. I jumped on it as I thought that alone was an incredible deal.

Then I get there and find out it also has the 510 table upgrade, ringmaster, lathe duplicator, sharpening guide, shaper with all kinds of cutters and a custom made saw horse that holds all the attachments.

Let me know what you guys think. I am still cleaning up the workshop and setting it all up and will do the maintenance and cleaning DIY's and a good waxing. I can't wait to start using it and am very excited to be a new owner. I will post some pictures later as there are a few pieces I can't figure out what they go to. Thanks!! I almost feel like I should go back and give the guy more money.

Fantastic deal! Especially the custom fixture to hold all those attachments. Finding a place to put all the accessories is one of the biggest unmentioned headaches of this system!

I'd like to see some details (maybe photos from all directions) of the custom made saw horse.

Welcome to the forum. New members with new ideas are always a great gift to this group. Even those who don't like new ideas unless they are theirs really do appreciate the inputs.

Sure thing I will try to post some pics over the next day or so. The saw horse isn't too fancy I don't want to oversell it. It basically has two horizontal 2x4'a across the top with holes drilled to fit the table attachments. It's a simple but very effective design.

You will :D
Some will argue than one is enough, and it is, I just find multiple units convenient. Especially when handling sheet goods. But many other processes as well.

Have fun! :)

If you have never been around Shopsmith, make sure you study (videos, posts here, questions, etc) the differences in operations. They truly are great machines and they give you flexibility that I believe is found in few woodworking machines. JMHO

Welcome. You did get a good deal. While one works fine, over time you may find yourself wishing for a second machine. I know that I do. I just wish I could convince my hubby that I needed a second one.
