A lady from down the block and around the bend brought this over. Well it was still together when it arrived with dirt and all.
It was not total clear what she was expecting as she is from India and knows maybe or at least speaks a dozen words of English. She and my wife try to communicate but my wife knows zero of her language. They do manage to get something exchanged and at some points she has one of her adult children translate like last year when her husband died suddenly.
Anyway I figure she wanted it fixed so that is something I can do. It turned out that it is from India and she has had it for a long while and well she is not liking the American tools that her daughter has tried to replace it with. So since she seems me out woodworking often she thought she would give it a shot.
So I took it apart and fashioned a new handle:
It turned out reasonably well, getting a decent fit was interesting as it was no doubt hand made at some point many years ago. The pieces came together and this is what it looked like:
So it is a garden tool but do you know what it is called?
She stopped by a few days ago and collected it and seemed pleased. So I think that job is done but it would be nice to know if the tool has a name.

Re: What is it called?
A friend of mine a work said it is called a Khurpa, so I searched for that and found the attached image which looks pretty close.
