Year/ Owner's manual needed for 10ER?

Post by crig »

Hi, just bought a used SS for $150. Seems to run great, whoever had it gave it a great blue paint job. The serial # on the plaque says 95567; it's model 10ER. It has no speed adjustment, but uses a drive belt on a pulley with 3 tracks, presumably to adjust the speed. The motor is only a 1/2HP unit.I already have a 1982 SS, but this configuration is different enough to give me some questions on set up. Photo is attached. I need to identify the machine's year properly so I can find the correct owner's manual. Any help offered (year, or where to find the manual) would be most welcome.

That beauty was made probably late in 1952. It is a 10ER by it's SN. You can find all of the manuals for these machines on Everett's Cloud Drive at:

Have fun, they are great machines! :)

Score, it looks in great condition, and I like the colour. :)

It is strange but even though blue is my favourite colour, I seldom see a shade of blue that I think looks good on machinery.

The way the motor is mounted is innovative, ;) ;) but appears to be effective.

It seems to be sitting on the bench in an odd position, it should be centered front to back and there should be a bolt in the hole on the pivot base (lower right corner of the photo.)

In addition to the link that rjent provided, here is another good source for 10er related manuals. http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgIndex/de ... =338&tab=3

and here is a link to a digital book that covers 10er functions in more depth than the manual does. https://www.dropbox.com/s/x8nssglpvm4jj ... e.pdf?dl=0

Thank you, Ron. I appreciate your input. I have a summer house, and I have somewhat dismantled the unit so it would fit in the car. Over the next week I will try to re-assemble it in its new home; your comments will be put to good use!

I have a SS with S/N ER42502. By extrapolating, I figure it was made between 1950 and 51. It still runs great. As a modification, I took a 90 volt Treadmill motor and controller and replaced the fixed speed motor. I also found a 4 digit tachometer with magnetic pickup. A small magnet attached to the head pully and with a little ingenuity, built a plastic housing to mount the tach onto the head stock. I also purchased a NOVA four jaw chuck with standard jaws and 31mm jaws. I don't do a lot of turning but when I need to, it does exactly what I is required.

Shopsmith Model 10ER Serial Number ER40908 was made in April 1951 in the Eastern Plant. Yours would have been made not long after that.

Just curious what speed range you have with the motor setup?
