10er Rotational Play in Spindle?

One of my 10's has some slight rotational (not fore and aft) play (looseness) in the spindle. The other has none that I can percieve.

First of all, is this an issue, and second, if so, what is the fix?

Problem? maybe. Depends upon what it is being used for. Rotary positioning, yes. Most other tasks, not likely.

Fix? New quill shaft or drive sleeve or both.

It it well greased?

i.e. Until you experience a problem, keep it greased to help prevent further wear.

Thanks, JPG. No intention to use it for rotary positioning. Forced grease into slines and it made a difference for a very little while, but it came back after running it and moving the quill back and forth. Maybe I need to force more grease in?

I do not think added grease will eliminate backlash.(except very temporarily).

The grease will migrate.

Thanks. By the way, I checked my other 10 again, and it does have some play, but less.

Updating this thread in light of another recent thread. It appears that all of my Shopsmiths, including my MKV, have this rotational play. It appears my the 10er's have about the same with one maybe slightly less. The MKV has less than the two 10er's.

I'm wondering how many of the Shopsmiths have this play. In the other thread, the thread starter says he has none in his "greenie". Here's the thread:

I assume that rotational play and run out are one in the same. If so, do you have a dial indicator with which the run out can be measured?

Dusty, I do have a dial indicator with which I have measured runout. Maybe my word choice was not correct as to "rotational play"; but, what I mean by that is different than runout. What I mean is with the machine off and unplugged one can take hold of the end of the spindle, and can rotate very slightly in either direction.

No, not your word choice. Just my interpretation of what was said. If I hold the spindle on the left end and move the blade back and forth, I too have rotational play.

Do ,however, not mistake a loose set screw in the arbor for rotational play.

Either you have worn bearings, the wrong bearings (perhaps both) or an extremely acute sense of movement based on what Magna Quality Control on the 10E and 10ER Runout measurement allowed. See Illustration that came from Magna Advertising back in the 1940's and 50's.

The Induction Hardened Spindle was machined to .0002 of an Inch, and the original tubular steel way tubes were centerless ground to .002 of an Inch.
