Scroll Saw Sanding Platen

I'm not sure if the ShopSmith Scroll Saw can use these Olson ScrollSander Belts or not.

Not having a strip sander I find these come in handy for small parts. Sanding materials of a generally small thickness(<1/4") works great. When sanding pieces that are 3/4" thick I wasn't getting as good results. The belt was rounding over my edges. Increasing the tension on the belt didn't work, still too much flex in the belt.
I had to create a platen.

It worked well but I wanted more room around the platen/belt to get into tight places.

This worked wonderfully. It isn't perfect but it is a lot better than what I started with, nothing.

I haven't tried those yet, I have a pack I picked up a couple of years back and misplaced them for a while. I like your solution. I'll get to it one of these days and try the idea.

I use them a lot in our craft projects and they work great. I like the platen may have to try it. If you don't have a local place I find the following place to have great customer service and a good price:

Thanks. I'm gonna have to try those files. Any idea how rigid they are? Hopefully like a blade.

No, not rigid, a little less rigid than a sanding belt. They do make a round rigid file that is attached and used the same way.

I make these sanding strips by putting double stick tape on the back of a piece of sanding belt. I cut these into narrow strips and stick them on both sides of a saw blade. You only need a piece of sanding belt that is as long as the thickness you are sanding plus the stroke length of the saw. I use mostly carpet tape for this and large saw blades. Foam double sided tape tape works better for inside curves. I usually make mine about 1/4 inch wide.
You can also just use strips of sanding belt but they don't last as long and tend to round the edges more.
