I just bought a lamp to use on the lathe (I don't use the Shopsmith as a lathe since I would have to raise it up on blocks), but it looks like it will be useful with the Shopsmith, too. The lamp has a switchable magnetic base with a V-notch, so it clamps onto the way tubes quite well.

The lamp is pricey, even at 20 percent off through 08/31, but seems to be of high quality.

Very nice lamp. By the way, what do you use for a lathe?

I have a Jet 1221 midi lathe. It's on casters so I can put it away. If I ever get the space, I would like to get a bigger Jet or Powermatic. Jet now has the 1840DVR lathe with the same or similar motor to the PowerPro.

Thanks, Mike. That lamp should work great for your lathe. I have occasionally thought of getting a big lathe; but, for now I am happy using my Shopsmith 10er with a speed changer that is doing what I need it to do, small bowls, tops, goblets and containers.

I guess if I stick with turning for the long term, and want to turn large bowls, I may have to consider a large lathe like the 2 you have mentioned. Of course, if money were no object, I wouldn't mind a Robust lathe.

A good lamp should show some dust.

Another tip for anything magnetic that you want to attach to the SS whether it be a fence or the table is use one of the t-slot slides. They are steel and work really well. The magnetic force pulls the slider up against the slot and locks it in place.

GREAT IDEA!!!!!!

I liked the idea of this lamp so I ordered one. It arrived today, I attached it to the tubes, turned it on and it worked for about 5 minutes and died. Hopefully no one else is having this experience. Fortunately I ordered it through Amazon so getting it replaced should be fairly easy. I will try another on the bet this was a fluke because I do like the light.

Received this as a b-day present from my son. I've used it for some intricate scroll saw work and really I like it. Attaching it to the way tubes works for the scroll saw, but not as well for the bandsaw. I need to find a better arrangement for the bandsaw. The light that is emitted is like artificial sunlight. Extremely bright, but no glare. Pricey, but I think it is worth it.
