Floating Display Shelf

I made a mounting unit from big box 2x4 stock. The shelf slides over the mounting unit, until it's flush against the wall. I'll drill, counter-bore, screw and plug 4 screws through the top of the unit into the mounting fixture. (See pics 1 & 2, viewed from the back left). (The shelf unit is a couple inches longer than the mounting unit. This will allow me to really center the unit in the space when it's installed.)

The shelf carcass is 1/2" pw. A bottom, 2 sides, front and of course the top. No back.

Because the top is pw, I made an edging to go around the unit. I ripped it to size and the routed a shallow groove (1/8") so it wouldn't move around while gluing it to the top. I also routed a bull-nose profile on the outside edge. (pic 3 shows the top and trim molding.

Finally I cut and added the crown molding. I cut the miters on an old hand miter saw. It's just easier to manage than on the SS. The molding was glued and nailed into place. I used finish nailer with 1" nails. You can see the crown pretty well in pic 4. Pic 5 the unit is hanging off a wood storage rack, so you can see the whole thing.

I have it 'all' set up to spray paint in the shop, but thinking this might be better in the garage where I'll have more room. I'll take a couple more pics when its installed, if I can remember.

Looks good. That looks a lot like the mantles we would fabricate and install. Attached the same way. Can't wait to see the finished product installed.

That's one great-looking shelf! What are you going to display on it?

GREAT job! Did you have plans or did you free will it? I don't have that much brain power to think it though without plans and then it's questionable.

No idea what the couple plan to display on it. I saw their living room and I think their style would be considered 'traditional'. I scrounged thru my old magazines and found 5 floating shelf plans and they picked one from Woodsmith. I changed stock from all poplar to a combination of birch pw, pine, and poplar. I changed the size from 20" to 70" and how the unit is hung. Woodsmith editors used a cleat, I like this idea better because the weight is so far forward. I sprayed on tinted shellac primer yesterday, today is sanding - ugh.

Here are a couple pics of the unit in my workshop, converted to a spray booth. I'm scheduled to install it Saturday. Don't know why a couple are sideways, they were correct in the folder.
