Speed reducer

I’m getting into turning larger items and would like to purchase a Shopsmith speed reducer. Do any of you own one, and if so, what do you find as pros and cons? They seem fairly rare in the used marketplace.

Pros: Speeds down to 100 RPM, and tons of torque.
Cons: Mounting it takes longer than punching in a low speed on a PowerPro.
I had expected more of them to hit the used market after the PowerPro came out, but haven't seen that so far. PowerPro owners must be hanging on to them.

I've found that the speed reducer is also great for using with a circle cutter.

The speed reducer and the Power Pro gives a low of 35 RPM and tons of even more torque and is very good for finishing bowls and other stuff.

Check out this post
http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/woodw ... 17779.html and the imbedded YouTube link. It is not as handy or quick a setup as a SS speed reducer but it works well. It takes about 10 minutes to set up. The addition of a second stripped down headstock as part of that setup to use as a tailstock also solved my problem of the flex in the SS tailstock for certain projects where that became an issue.
