Leg Stands

Post by babalaisi »

Hello Forum,
Has anyone successfully taken the Leg Stands of a 510 or 520 Series to shorten the overall height of the machine?
I am hoping to take the whole machine off the stands and build a cabinet with drawers as a base with casters, or not, and then place the machine on that. The height of the 510 as it is is a little too high for my liking and need it to come down at least 6 inches to about a foot.
Any ideas or samples out there with some instruction help if possible?

Thanks

I have thought about doing the same. I have not done so because not only do you lower the work surface of the table saw but all other work surfaces as well. The height of the table saw is the only function that gives me concern.

My first off farm job was in a local factory. We had one machine (huge ancient die press) there that was a few inches too tall for most people to operate comfortably all day, especially the short guy that used it the most often. They had the maintenance guys build a platform in front of the machine that could be used or removed and sat aside. It worked for the short guy OK and I could use it OK either way. Another operator was about 6'2" and if he was going to be running it for more than a few minutes he moved the platform aside. It was kind of heavy but the press sat in a fairly heavy traffic area and the was usually somebody walking past who could help move it.
Maybe years ago now we discussed this before along with making adjustable height legs or bases... Maybe somebody better at finding old threads than I am can relocate them. I'm sure we have had a lot of member turnover since then.

You can see one mounted on a cabinet in this video. The part showing turning on a Shopsmith starts about 13:30, the best view on the cabinet starts about 15:10.

The video was filmed in 1998, long before the Shop Deputy was released, I think he just removed the legs and bolted the bases to the cabinet. ;)

All a Shop Deputy kit is two shortened tubes and some mounting hardware.

True, but the Shop Deputy was introduced after the introduction of the Power Pro (in the late 2000's), to enable purchasers to re purpose their Mark V headstock after they had upgraded.

I guess what I meant to say is people were making the equivalent to a shop deputy long before SS saw a market opportunity.
