Bad nesting this season for the Wrens

Post by reible »

I've taken down and cleaned out my birdhouses for the season. Only one wren box wasn't used but three were. Two of them had a total of 9 baby birds dead in them. Five in one and four in another.

I have no idea what caused that. It is only the female who tends them so if she is killed or injured.... or if they nest too early or too late.... could be other reasons as well but this is the first year we have seen this and we have had boxes up for a long time. We also don't know how many survived if any.

I enjoy the wrens and was sad to find this but that is how nature is.

This was also an odd year with the solitary bee's. The apple trees bloomed early or the bee's were late. We had only a couple of apples and the bee house seems to have only 5 compartments used. Next spring will be interesting as the bee's may have found other accommodations or it could be they had a bad year trying to find food since a lot of the blooming was done before they showed up.
