Joining the Family

Post by ericolson »

Hello, all. Eric here, from Springfield, MO. I've finally taken the leap and joined this forum. I used to be a member of the SSUG and the 10ER User's Group, then wandered away from forums for a couple of years. I caught my Shopsmith bug when I bought an old 10ER at a garage sale when I lived in Hemet, CA. I was hooked on 10ERs for years. I bought, restored, and sold seven of them. One went to a fellow in Australia. I stumbled onto my MK V model 500 Gold/Tan model when I went to but an "old lathe" from a fellow in Chula Vista, CA. I drove out of there with a 14" bandsaw and the "old lathe". Since then, I've moved to Missouri, and have acquired a shop full of vintage machinery. I've listed the bulk of it in my profile. I've got a shop full of stand alone tools, including a couple of old lineshaft dinosaurs (my babies!!), plus my Shopsmith. When I don't have anything to build on commision, I usually use my Shopsmith for my personal projects. I'm currently working on a pair of Greene and Greene style nightstands out of walnut and cherry.
Even with all of my stand alone machinery, I find myself using the Shopsmith quite regulary because it's just plain fun to use and, I'll readily admit, I feel a bit guilty when it's standing there unused! I've recently (in the last six months) acquired a Gold/Tan bandsaw and I'm on the hunt for various other Gold Tan special purpose tools. They're extremely difficult to find as the Gold/Tan version was only made for three or so years.
There's some interesting information on the Shopsmith on the Old Woodworking Machines website. Anyone with a vintage Shopsmith may want to consider posting images of their machine(s) on the photo index. The last time I checked, there were no Greenies posted yet.
Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself.

Eric
