cleaning rust

I purchased a used mark V (1985). The main table has some rust on the legs (where the notches are.) What is a good, safe way to clean this up. It won't come off with elbow grease alone.

(By safe, I mean--I don't want the table to slip in the middle of sawing something.)

you can try " fine " emery cloth on it with some WD-40 and then wipe with paint thinner and polish. If you can't get into any small holes with the sandpaper then try soaking the part in water mixed with Alka-Seltzer tablets for a day, then brush off the rust.

good luck
