It's been awhile since Shopsmith offered the Kreg Bandsaw upgrade ( as in a few years). I was on the Kreg site today and saw it. Would anyone know if or what is necessary to upgrade the SS Bandsaw for the upgrade to be successful? I found the fence, microadjustor (sp?), and resaw fence.

That's weird! I thought the Kreg fence was still available from Shopsmith under "Premium Bandsaw Fence." But when I just checked that link, only some of the components are available, including the front and rear fence supports. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... mfence.htm

There are differences.

The Shopsmith version has a rear rail, which is just angle aluminum. The Kreg version didn't have a rear rail.

The front rail is an extrusion, which I assume is the same as what Kreg sells.

The fence head I assume is also available from Kreg and identical.

What Shopsmith sold as the "fence" itself with the Premium Bandsaw Fence is actually the same exact extrusion sold as the 20" Aluminum Miter Extension http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... rgauge.htm


So between Shopsmith, Kreg and the hardware store (for the angle aluminum) you should be able to put one together.

That said, I'd call Shopsmith and see what's up.

Your post reminded me of my upgrade of SS band saw with no fence to the SS Kreg fence. I anticipated smooth adjustment of the fence angular position to compensate for blade drift when re sawing. Upon installation of the Kreg fence, I discovered that adjustment of two bolts was necessary to angle the fence to re saw consistently, and it is VERY touchy. I should have given more thought to the SS fence since the fine adjustment for re sawing is easy to use.

There are some other advantages to the Kreg fence that may make it worthwile as long as re sawing is not important to you.

FWIW this is my experience with the Kreg bandsaw fence choice.

I really LOVE my Kreg Bandsaw Fence! I went on the Shopsmith Page and found a reference to it, but only some supports and NO photographs. I've seen the fence in action and I was in a woodworking shop (where I eventually bought it) and there was a Shopsmith [Bandsaw] Owner in there that the Kreg Fence couldn't be installed in the SS Bandsaw.

The Kreg Fence comes with 2 sets of mounting screws, 1/4-28" and 6mm. The 6mm is a tad smaller than 1/4" and the front of the SS Bandsaw isn't very wide or thick, so I used the 6mm, drilling and tapping the 2 mounting holes.

Setup was a breeze, taking only a few minutes. After making a near-perfect resaw, I took the fence off and them put it back on and made another resaw cut that was the same as the original. I did this because, as all SS Owners know, the blade comes out the front to change.

The picture really doesn't do it justice, 'cause I had to crop the heck out of it to get it on the Forum.

Well worth it!

If you want to try again, maximum size limits are 2050 pixels wide x 1180 pixels tall x 2 MB. All three size limits must be met.

Sometimes just reducing the resolution to say 72 or 150 dpi will get the picture small enough to post.

I used to use a couple of different ways to resize pics for posting here but I finally just starting sharing pics from my phone to my Facebook page... Then I use "save image as" to download it to my computer. It will then "fit" here just fine. I find it much easier and it doesn't matter what odd pic I do that with most of the time several people "like" it on Facebook.
