Sorry if I break any forum etiquette, I didn't see any rules for posting anywhere. I just bought a Shopsmith Mark VII for $200 from a guy at work. It has most of the accessories, but is missing the lathe tool rest assembly. Most of the parts (arm and tool rest) aren't too badly priced, but the tool rest post is about $80, and I don't know 100% if it will fit the Mark VII. Can anyone confirm that the PN:514416 Tool Rest Post sold on the Shopsmith site will fit a Mark VII? Alternatively, is it possible to remove a post from the saw table and use that instead or are there aftermarket posts that will work?

I did not verify the PN you stated, but any there is some differences in the post, but they should not cause compatibility problems.

At $80 I would look on e-bay for something less $.

The only one there today is too $.

I just checked the Mark VII manual and parts lists and although the arm and tool rest are different from the Mark 5 the post looks the same as the older Mark 5 post with the grooves all the way around the post and has the same part number 501354 as the Mark 5 from that era, not with the teeth on one side like the newer ones. It appears a Mark 5 lathe tool rest assembly will work in a Mark VII Carriage. One of the caricaturists of the Mark VII parts is they are squared and angled, not rounded surfaces like the Mark V. It's the easiest way to tell a mislabeled part like the Tailstock on eBay or other sale sites.

Actually the M5/VII posts are threaded, not grooved(ringed).

Truth be known, only close examination will reveal the 'spiral' groove.

Thanks for the offer ChrisNeilan! I did buy the upgrade arm (I'm new to woodturning, so the easy adjustability seems like it would be very useful), so I think I'll try it out with the table post and see how that works.

Chris if you still have this too rest I'd be interested in buying it from you
