Powere pro problem

Post by jonesuh »

I'm having some issues with my power pro and since I'm not very good with electric motors I thought I would ask SS---sent an email last week explaining problem using their form---no response--I'm going to be in the Dayton area next month thought I would take it in and let them service--after 3 15 minute + phone calls on still no one answered---web site says they are no longer in Dayton---anyone know what's going on--are they still in business? service units? how do we contact them?

Contact information:

http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/contact.htm

I'd say to call before you do anything else. I've had very poor results using email in the past some years............. calling is called for. I would not just bring the headstock to them without the call or if you get lucky an email response.

You can also give the forum a try, lots of owners here and some have had problems taken care of that might have knowledge of your issue.

From the web site:
Shopsmith
6530 Poe Ave
Dayton, OH 45414-2591

We no longer have a factory outlet store at this location. You may order online or have our helpful Customer Service staff help you with your order at (937) 890-5197.
They only closed the retail store not the rest of the operation. Do contact them prior to showing up at the factory.

thanks
the problem occurs after I have been working on I for a hour or two---not constant but just having the machine turned on with some sawing ---acts like its overheating but it certainly doesn't feel hot to touch--just warm-- the menu looks like machine re-booting --rotating thru speeds--try to turn on just goes back to start up speed --have to unplug wait a few minutes then we are good for a short time --it does not turn off just goes to the 500 speed setting
sorry if I'm not explaining myself clearly

Sounds like I am having a similar problem. I will be working for some time (mostly jointing) and all of a sudden the speed reduces and I get a (slow speed) warning. The first time I talked to Shopsmith I was told there is an optical speed sensor that sometimes becomes obscured with dust etc. I was told to remove the covers and blow out the front of the motor. I have done this several times and it looks like it works but then back to the same problem. 3/5/2018 called Shopsmith and the person I talked to said he did not have any mention of the problem in his current list of issues. He told me he will make out a ticket and forward it to the engineering department. He took my telephone number and said he will call me back when he hears back from engineering.

I am beginning to believe it's an over heating problem of some kind but like you, the motor did not seem to be overheating. It's hard for me to believe I am the only one having the issue.

I will post their reply if I ever hear from them. If anyone else had the problem maybe they can post their solution.

Call Early.

e-mails are likely a waste of time.

CS is busy answering actual calls.

From mt experience Customer Service should be re-named to Customer Sales!!!
I don't think they even know what "Service" means.

Unfortunately 'they' all are essentially new hires. Give them time to learn the difference. Very minimal personal knowledge is required to sell. Service has very different requirements(like understanding the product and how it functions).

I agree service is not very good at this point(from frequent complaints here).

I too am having issues with my power pro! Mine started about a month ago, started with a rattle after about an hour or so of use, and got progressively worse in that it began after a few minutes. So I took the cover off and adjusted the eccentric bushing which seemed to help a bit but did not solve the problem! I noticed that the belt was not as tight as I remembered from the installation video, so I tightened that - ran smoother but still a rattle. Called Shopsmith and talked to Brooke, she asked me to take a video at various speeds and send it to her! I did, interestingly enough, the lower speeds from 500 - 3400 there is a distinct rattle of various intensities. At 9500 it purrs, but running at 2700 for 1 hr. +/- I get the "Inverter Heat" message! I sent the videos to Brooke who forwarded them to Engineering - came back with no determination as to the cause could be made and I needed to send the headstock in for evaluation and hopefully repair. Brooke sent me a FEDEX return that was supposed to include a Box that did not arrive. I called Shopsmith and was told that they are out and do not know when they will be made! Waiting for a reply on that! In short, I have been put on hold for quite a while but the people that I have talked to have been polite and try to be helpful unlike some other businesses that I have dealt with! My issue is that I don't want to continue to use my Shopsmith for fear that I will do some serious damage to it! So, I'm looking for some urgency on their part!
