Very nice!
It also reminds me of another article I saw on a molding plane where the recess-ramp was open on one side. No reason it can't work!

Thanks,

and here is a youtube video describing in detail how to go about making it. Paul Sellers is an inspiring hand tool woodworker with a great weekly video series.

I was looking at the Paul Sellars video for clues about how to make one.

Very nice.

hard wood will last longer then pine , especially when you start using it a lot.

What was the angle of the grind on the chisel ? and are you going to put a finish on it? a little wax the bottom edge will help .

I have been a fan of Paul Sellers for a long time , the first video of his I watched was his work bench build !!
Been hooked every since .
He works with hand tools and makes it look easy .

I'm another Paul Sellers fan. :) We must have discovered him about the same time, I built a bench from that series of videos and have followed him since then. I do skip the posts where he gets philosophical though, they are not my cup of tea. ;)

I ground it 30 degrees with a micro bevel 3 or 4 degrees. If I use it enough, I will make one out of hardwood, probably Pecan or Walnut.

Very nice, thanks for posting. I'm also a fan of Paul Sellers, they wouldn't let me carry the lumber in his shop....

Around here in the old days beech was pretty popular for wooden planes. Many of them had harder soles laminated onto them. Hedge or black locust would probably serve well. I had a whole set of wooden specialty profile planes and some other tools including a wood and brass bit brace. I didn't ever want to use them since they had belonged to one of my great great grandfather's and I didn't want to risk damaging them. I passed them along to my son and I know he will take care of them. I also gave him a wooden spoke shave I had acquired at an auction sale of a busy copper-smith I was acquainted with years ago. He was moving his shop about 8 miles and reorganizing. He told me that he found it while tearing down a log cabin and that where they found it up in the connection between the roof and the top of the wall it had to have been left there when the old cabin was built in the late 1700's. Somehow it just seemed to belong with those tools of my gg-gf. :)
