Hi Everyone, continuing on my path of maintenance for the Shopsmith. I have an 84, and just missed the upgrade to the two bearing quill by a few months. It's a single bearing. The retract feature doesn't work at all when the quill is in. If you take a look at the video below, if I pull the quill it will retract very slowly on its own, only about 3/4 of a turn. Just trying to see if i'm on the right path. I assume based on this it just may need a thorough cleaning and i should have a non broken spring if it can retract the 3/4 turn amount right?

On a side note, can someone explain in more detail the string trick so I don't lose that curved washer piece? I've read about it but not entirely sure how I run it through. Once I take the quill feed sleave and quill feed hubs off both sides will there be an opening I can run a string through end to end?

That's weird! You don't have the quill lock tightened slightly do ya?

Have you tried re-tensioning the spring per the Sawdust Session video?

No quill lock tightening at all. Everything is completely loose in that video

I decided to take the plunge and take it apart. The spring is intact but appears to have come unhooked off of that little slot. It definitely needs a cleanup.

Now what i don’t know is since it did wind back 3/4 of a turn on its own slowly...if it was really unhooked why did it do that? Wondering if i unhooked it accidentally when i released all the tension. Either way tomorrow i will clean it all up and try to reassemble and see where we stand. I didn’t need the string trick. Took out the cover plate and was able to get a hand in there and catch the domed washer

I am officially stumped. I cleaned everything. Hooked the spring back on the little knob part. The spring is undamaged. I put it all back together without inserting the quill. Wind it up...nothing. No retraction. I literally have no idea. Any thoughts? The quill lock and feed stop are all loose.

The outside of the spring is properly hooked into that slot. The inside is hooked properly on that knob part. So what gives?? Can a spring that looks fine with no tears be so worn it wouldn’t retract at all??

Took it apart again. The spring had come off again. So i attach it again and just try to spin it by hand while only the spring assembly is on nothing else. I can make maybe a quarter turn and then it just stops dead. I can’t figure out what’s wrong. Does this look worn? It looks ok to me.

Success! On a hunch (since the spring came off AGAIN) when i reassembled...i decided the little knob part was sticking out too far which was why it unhooked so easy. Below is the original depth. I gently tapped with a hammer and set it down closer to the base. Once i did that everything worked as it should.

Try straightening/flattening the end of the spring by the key hole slot, the pin may not be fully seating in the slot due to the bend.
