‘Almost Spring ‘ cleaning

HI folks, thought I’d put this in the community forum as it doesn’t involve any woodworking directly yet.
I finally hauled my 510 up from my folks’ place in the Shenandoah valley to central NY last fall. Did you know a 510 will fit in a Prius?

I got it ‘all’ (minus the table support legs and a crosscut sled) in one trip.

Then winter came and I didn’t get out to the shop for the past several months. The temps have finally come up lately so despite the nor’easter that hit late last week, the yard has gone from knee deep snows, to mud and slush....

Time to get out in the shop and tackle the huge disorganized mess out there.

My shop is a cozy 240 SF... it is in my Barn out in the back yard.:


When I got my SS up home, I cleared just enough space to put it in the shop, and then shut things down for the winter. I spent some of the winter reading up on the machine, and decided to rearrange my shop to let the SS have direct access to my limited power outlets. Everything else runs fine off of my two circuits and extension cords (or has so far) but since the manual says plug the SS in directly, I cleared this space:

Yes I’m aware the Band Saw is backwards, I just stuck it there for storage for the winter...



I have a ton of crud to sort and stow before things will be comfortable out there, but it is a start.

I’ll update this from time to time when I get through an area and am not too embarrassed to post the results.

Here in central NY March is the transitional month... but we’re at least 6 weeks away from really decent weather.

Good luck with this cleanup effort. At least it does not appear that you have much to do to get the Mark V in condition. Lubricate, wax, align, lubricate, wax and align. Stay safe. Looking forward to the progress reports.

Thanks Dusty! It really should be in great shape, my push right now is finding more space... going to tackle the next 5 feet

Spent a couple of hours sorting and moving more stuff...


That’s an old bed frame taken back down to components... I salvaged 60 or more deck screws out of it. Now I am in playing in sketch up for some storage fixtures


That little heater wasn’t keeping up, so while it wasn’t terribly unpleasant out there, I could definitely use a coffee break

My second job had me busy... didn’t get out to the shop, but am going to put in at least an hour or two tonight after work

Yep... I can really identify with that statement.

When I put up the wall to separate the woodshop from the rest of the basement the part that was left filled up with "stuff" massively with a huge swooshing sound... That was "several" years ago now and it just kept growing.
A few weeks ago I had the woodshop area (24' x 40') nearly under control tackling "another 5 feet" at a time. It still had way too much stuff in it that didn't belong there and lots of stuff without proper homes but it was coming along and getting to where I could navigate all around easily. I had room to shift SS's and other bigger tools around as needed. I sometimes fear that such could be the high point for my shop and that it will never be the impressive place I visualize in my head when I am daydreaming.
Then I got the big idea that if I take in the whole basement (36' x 40') under that wing of the house as woodshop then my shop could magically become clear and organized... I kept looking at it and it wouldn't come together in my head. Soooo, I decided that I needed to take that wall completely out and instead of all of it just being shop it would now all be one big room. The wall is out now. AAAACCCCKKKKK!!! OK, I'm better now. I now have so much stuff all pushed together into bunches that I struggle to keep paths open to feed the wood furnace. The more I cart stuff out the door to the trailer to put out for the trash guys and the more I feed a lot of cardboard and paper trash through the wood furnace the more what is left seems to keep expanding like one of those rubber rafts where you yank a cord to blow it up... Some of it needs to go to the attic (as soon as I get those new shelves built up there) . Stuff like fishing stuff, archery stuff, my clay pigeon thrower etc. etc. etc... Some items are antiques that need to go to a general purpose room at the front of the house to be displayed but that room still has stuff to be moved out of it first to make enough room there.
Then there is my tendency to get easily sidetracked by seeing a shiny object...
It really is coming together, as you say "another 5 feet" at a time.

Aah, the good old days. When we finished out a large basement playroom for our very young children, the room that is now my workshop was the dumping ground for ALL of the junk in the basement. Plus there were a few piles of crap that had been dumped there when we moved in ten years earlier, and never touched since. I remember being excited when I got a space about 6 feet square cleared, so that I had a staging area for moving all the other junk.

But the day finally came when the room was cleared out, and the workshop buildout could begin. In the photo below, I had already added the fluorescent lights, replacing two measly bare-bulb fixtures.

I’ve got one Huge old project spread out all over in there... which is going to get a set of shelves until I slog through it. Then there are a couple of tools that will be finding new homes... thanks guys! My shop luckily is pretty devoid of stuff other than what I put in there myself
