Cleaning the Disc Sander Face

Post by judebak »

Hello everyone! I am a proud new owner of a Shopsmith Mark V, model 500 made in 1956 (I think based on the serial number). I recently purchased it at an estate sale for $225. It seems to run well, but I am cleaning and lubricating before I get to serious. I have included a picture.

I do need some help on how to properly clean the disc sander before placing a new sanding disc. It is pretty well messed up and has quite a bit of the old sanding disc residue.

Thank you for your help.

A good soak in mineral spirits should do it.

If it was made in 1956, it is a Mark 5 Greenie. The disk is likely distic adhesive.
