New to the family

Post by agleason »

I recently purchased my first Shopsmith. I remember watching the commercials back in the early 80's as a kid and my dad wanted one pretty badly! Mine is one the 50th anniversary models. The date on the unit is 11-19-01. The unit appears to have been used very little. It came with the bandsaw, jointer, belt sander and a speed reducer. Any how, I am cleaning and working to align everything. I have to say, it is a very well made machine and I am proud to own it!

Welcome! Nice looking 520. They are great machines!

Very nice ! Welcome to the forum. They are wonderful machines. Be sure and go through the alignment setup from start to finish. If you did not get the manual with it the procedure is posted here on the forum. When you buy one new or used it is best to assume it is not aligned and that every bolt needs tightening.

Something I just noticed and not heard about before.

The product label calls this a "Pro Mark V Unit". Never saw one called a "Pro".

BTW Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your new toy as much as I have. Please do carefully clean, lubricate and align this machine. It will serve you long and well if you care for it properly.

Thanks everyone, I've been doing the alignments and it definitely needed it. I'm following the manual closely.

My original Headstock says the same except date code 11-13-01. The Headstock I put my Power Pro upgrade into which is date code 09-11-01 says 50th Anniversary Edition MKV and is Model 555861. Both of my Headstocks are 50th Anniversary Editions.

Andrew, enjoy your Mark V 520.

The Shopsmith Online Catalog refers to a 555861 as a Model 505.

I have to say, I love this machine. Without a doubt, the best tool I've ever owned! The support and community around these machines are amazing, I also own a Smithy 3-n-1 metal working machine and the Shopsmith is by far a better engineered and built piece.
