New Here & Have Questions

I am new here and have lots of questions.

I purchased a used Shopsmith Mark V (my first, which I am sure is obvious) which may be a Model 500. I was certain that I received a chuck for drilling and a center for the tailpiece and a live center along with the tools for turning. Unfortunately, I was still recover from major surgery and just finished moving. Since I could not move anything in my own, others did the work for me and if I did receive the parts, I have been unable to locate them. Although I did attempt a search in this forum, I am much too new to know exactly what I should search. I need the missing parts and I have confirmed that the table saw and the band saw work well. However, I have not yet tried using the planer as I do not know if anything is missing. Any help determining what I still need and where I should look for replacement parts that anyone may give is appreciated.

Best regards,

Composed

Welcome to the forum! If you post photos of what you have, we can tell you what's missing. There are photo size limits (2050 x 1180 pixels, and 2 MB).

As to where to get missing parts, many parts for the older machines can still be had from Shopsmith itself new as there is a lot of overlap/commonality. Ebay is a source for used parts, as is craigslist.

Algale,

Thank you for your reply. I am attaching/posting photos as you suggested. Please forgive the mess in the shop. I am in the process of modifying the shop and it has not yet complete. Please let me know if there are questions or different photos are needed.

Thanks.

So you know you are missing the drill chuck.

You are also missing a couple of pieces for the lathe: the drive center (goes on the spindle), the cup center (fits in tail stock). Those are parts A and B here. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... enters.htm

Also your tailstock is missing the eccentric insert (without which the cup center won't fit). Shown as number 288 here. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/part ... xpview.htm I can't tell but you may also be missing the set screw (number 289 on the diagram; older models have only 1).

That's a start. Others can pipe up who are more familiar with the 500.

Al,
Thank you very much. That gives me a good start towards having a fully working system! I’m looking forward to having this up and running to keep me out of my wife’s hair when/if I eventually retire. In the meanwhile, I am looking forward to the enjoyment of getting to know my Shopsmith.

Go to Everett Davis' Google drive and download the file Buying a Used Shopsmith Version 2. It has descriptions of everything that originally came with your Shopsmith.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... EpSUm9GMW8

It's on the first page under Files.

Thanks, Mike.
I have located and downloaded a copy of the file and plan to go through it this weekend.
Thanks for the help,

While there find all the exploded illustrated parts drawings I recreated with different assembly axes. They are zoom capable PDF’s often oversized drawings so Be sure if you print them check the instructions to your printer to scale them down to the paper size you have

The buying a used Shopsmith document covers just the Mark 5/V but not the Special purpose tools.

Printing out an exploded parts list and the crossing off what you have on it might be the best way to identify what is missing versus what belongs on a different machine.

You may find the recent 7 headstocks side by side helpful as well.

Welcome to the family!

Everett

Having a 500 myself, I notice the following:
1. Don't see the 12" sanding disk.
2. Is that the rest of the lower saw guard and upper guard on a shelf below? If so, looks like you have the "upgraded" version. The original saw guards with my 1980 model were cast metal. Looks like the tie bar under the table has been drilled for an upgraded lower guard shield and the bracket at the back of the table is for the clear plastic upper guard.
3. The saw table insert has been modified ... those circular holes are not original.
4. I see what looks like a cutter head guard for a jointer, but am I missing seeing the jointer itself?
5. 5/32" allen wrench?
6. Blade arbor nut wrench?

Attached is page 4 from my Owner's Manual, which shows the Standard Accessories for a machine from 1980 ... yours may have come with more or less, or improved versions of things like the saw guards, if newer than mine.

The bench and way tubes looks exceptionally clean.

Since you are new to Shopsmith, you will have a lot of reading to do to learn about your model, the history and evolution. Everett's, JPG's and mickyd's posts, at the top of the Maintenance and Repair Forum, are loaded with valuable information.
