Spindle slippage

Post by hooper57 »

Had new belts replaced on my 86. Table saw worked fine for awhile but now as I spool up the speed from low to high the machine chatters a little and for a bit in the mid range the blade actually stopped spinning for a sec and then got up to speed. I pulled the cover and noticed the drive belt has actually been slapping the way tube. Am I to assume I’ve already stretched out that drive belt after only a couple hours of use? I cut three 4’x4’ sheets of 3/4 ply which did tax the motor, perhaps this was too much for the unit? Any ideas?

Your pulley sheaves might not be moving freely enough to take up the belt tension. Make sure they are clean and moving freely so they follow the belt change speeds.
The belt didn't likely stretch enough to cause the problem.

Floating sheave on the motor shaft.

I’ll check the clean aspect but do you think I may need to oil them as well? Is this how they behave when dry? Reason I ask is I had headstock sent off for total servicing so I’m assuming it was lubed as well.

Pull the belt cover off and watch what is actually happening.

With it unplugged, you should be able to pull the floating sheave out easily(sorta) but do be careful to not allow it to slip/slam back closed.

I am surprised it would be 'dry' after servicing(BTW by whom?)

Jacob Anderson. I’ll hit those sheaves with penetrating oil as per his video, see if that helps

If Jacob did it the sheaves will be lubricated. How long ago did he service it? DO NOT use penetrating oil. I don't know what video you are referring to but I suspect he said penetrating oil to free a stuck sheave and not to lubricate. The oil you want is a light oil like 3 in one or turbine oil. I like the turbine oil in a zoom spout container. It makes it easy to get into the head stock. It should be available at your local Home Depot or Lowes.

It was Jacobs video and actually the sheave became stuck as it no longer moved from mid speed to low. The unit now progresses from low to high and back without the extreme difficulty that the unit always had in the low range. I will clean the penetrant out now and replace with the proper oil. Thanks for your help.
