Not sure, but I think 'read/received' is a factor.

Your sent message will stay in the Outbox until it has been read by the recipient, then it will move to the Sent Messages folder.

People don't always notice the little [1] in the Notifications or Private Messages up in the top bar, ;) especially if they haven't turned on email notifications.
So sometimes you need to make a post telling them to check their Private messages to bring it to their attention. :)

I sure don't notice PM's... I sometimes (rarely) find one there that has been there for months. A while back I found one from a forum member that had been deceased for a while.
For my part I would just as soon turn PM off...

In a kind of related matter I am starting to consider dropping Facebook because they will not leave me alone to enjoy it my way. I only belong to stay connected with some good friends and my widely spread out family and I belong to a number of good groups there, mostly antique tractors and saw-milling etc.
If it were not for the extensive family connections I would just walk away but I would never be able to connect with all of them anyplace else.

More recently Facebook has gone nuts insisting that everybody be connected to everybody else on the planet. Most recently they have now sat up another messaging thingy that I did not join on my own and they are not sending me friend request for it, they are just attaching people to me without asking and just announcing their presence...  I have yet to figure how to opt out of it. They are getting really pushy.
"Max Headroom" lives... :(

If you are referring to Messenger. You can hide the message bar on the right side of the screen. At the bottom of the bar, click on the little gear icon and select "Hide Sidebar"

Also, in your news feed if you are getting posts/ads that you didn't ask for and don't want. On a post you don't want, on the top line click on the three dots, and select Hide Post.
